South Dakota, situated in the heart of the North Central region, stands as a state within the expansive Great Plains. Named in honor of the Dakota Sioux Native American tribe, whose presence has historically been significant and still forms a substantial portion of the state's population across nine reservations, it holds a unique cultural heritage. Despite being the 17th largest in terms of area, South Dakota ranks as the 5th least populous and the 5th least densely populated state among the fifty in the United States. Its journey to statehood, intertwined with North Dakota's, unfolded on November 2, 1889, with President Benjamin Harrison strategically obscuring the sequence of their admission. Pierre holds the mantle of the state capital, while Sioux Falls claims the title of South Dakota's most populous city, boasting a population of approximately 192,200 residents.

In South Dakota, the majority of residents reside in the eastern region, where the fertile soil supports a wide array of crops. On the western side of the Missouri River, ranching takes precedence, while the economy leans more heavily on tourism and defense spending. Most of the Native American reservations are located in the western part of the state. The revered Black Hills, a cluster of low pine-covered mountains sacred to the Sioux, grace the southwestern landscape, housing the famed tourist attraction, Mount Rushmore. South Dakota experiences a temperate continental climate with clearly defined seasons and varying levels of precipitation, from moderate in the east to semi-arid in the west.
